Oh, where to start? The movie, co-produced by Wayne Rogers (Trapper John from M*A*S*H) is a bit difficult to follow, which is not one little bit surprising seeing that it is the directorial brainchild of Ted V. Mikels. The plot is fairly typical B movie fare, but has a few subplots and distractors to keep the viewer on their toes. The movie shows off the ample talents of Tura Satana as much as possible in the lead role of ruthless Chinese spy. She and her two henchmen (one is a Hispanic man who may be supposed to be Cuban, all we know is that he likes to dance around with his switchblade a lot, the other is a cranky old coot who reminds me of Abe Vigoda with constipation) are trying to get the secrets of lunatic scientist John Carradine’s Astro Zombie project. When John enters the film, the problems start.

Carradine and his conveniently mute French Igor character, ‘Franchot”, work in a lab in a huge mansion bringing back people from the dead. This is not a good situation. While Tura is pretty (as are the good lab assistant women we meet later), and the spies vs. the CIA subplot is kind of interesting, as soon as they show the lab I cringe because only one thing happens there: Carradine explains every painful little bit of his procedures to Franchot is pseudo-science technobabble like “We must feed this memory circuit through the emotional quotient rectifier!” This just never ends. Apparently Wayne Rogers picked up a physics textbook, flipped to the glossary and started writing. Man, the Carradine stuff is just painful. The only thing that is good about John’s lab is his equipment. He has all the bubbling test tubes, of course, but when he is doing his dirty work he straps what looks for all the world like a colander to his victims head; no doubt it has something to do with the dekrelnification redundancy circuiting of the gauss plasma ion generator of the prefrontal cortex of the brain stem. (But I digress. Of course John will tell you what it’s for; I must have dozed for a second during that monologue.)

Eventually, the cops get involved and start looking for the Astro Zombies, who are, of course, on a killing spree. There are many plot cul-de-sacs to be negotiated, including my favorite which involves the absolute lamest ‘exotic’ dance that I have ever seen in a movie; yes, even worse than in Mikels’ much better “Girl In The Gold Boots”, from 1969 (and notably starring the same male lead.) The three spies lug around a radio detector thing that makes the exact same sounds as Spock’s panel on Star Trek, and locate Carradine’s lab. The spies try to hijack the Astro Zombies, but Carradine sees the error of his ways, and the good guys show up. For some reason the head lawman (we aren’t sure what agency they are from, but are led to infer the CIA) brings his girlfriend to the bust. It is a wild melee and justice is served. I particularly like the John Carradine/Tura Satana joint death scene and the zombie with a machete.

This movie has some fun spots for bad movie fans like me. It has some hilarious scenes, like when the zombie holds a flashlight to the photocells in his forehead to get recharged. It also has some classic day/night confusion a la Ed Wood, and this is compounded by the fact that some of the film is way too dark, especially when the spies and CIA guys are having a shootout in the apartment complex (I may be wrong, but that apartment complex looks to me to be the exact same one from Mikels’ later film “The Corpse Grinders”. Did Ted live there?) The wacky plot and all it’s needless but fun twists are big pluses, but I just couldn’t give it more than three stars for the huge chunk of John Carradine rambling on about infusing the memory proteins in the hydrogen recombiners, or something like that. Good luck!

Lets face it. The point in making a movie like Astro Zombies is not to win an Oscar, it is to take 10K$ and turn it into 50K$. The flick opens with a shapely middle aged woman driving what is now a vintage Mustang convertable through her “Malibu” neighborhood while listening to upbeat elevator music on the radio. I know this because the camera made a point to film the radio twice. Well as soon as she parks her car in the garage, even with the barking dog outside trying to warn her, an Astro Zombies’ smoke alarm goes off and she gets nailed. A promising beginning eh.
We have a host of bumbling C I A men trying to track down the zombie. How we ever survived the cold war is a mystery to me. Now the spies: Satana, representing Red China. Juan, representing Cuba. Yes, and there was an Oaf from the DDR. Satana had to be the worst spy in history. The only interrogation she performed was on one of the Bumble Bureau agents. She asked him. “Who are you?” (Something Juan had already learned from his wallet ID.) When he doesn’t answer she burns him with a cigarette and tells the others to kill him.Alas, cigarettes were only .30$ a pack back then, so she could afford to have a little fun. Then when she finally confronts Carradine who plays the mad scientist that created the zombies, she tells him they want his knowledge. Lo’ and behold the first time he does something she doesn’t like she shoots him in the back. Satanas’ great looks make up for her lack of interest in James Bond Movies of the time. But, I beleive even Bubba the redneck could take one look at her and tell that, “That’s a commie spy.”
Now Juan, looks like a Hispanic member of the Monkees. He loves to kill folks with his switchblade. I know this because he appears to have an orgasm every time he makes a kill.
As for the German Oaf he’s just there for Juan to have someone to stick when he attempts to cut Mao and Castro out of Zombie Technology.
One of the coolest characters in the film is Franchot, the Mad Scientists’ assistant. Since he is mute’ he doesn’t have any lines.
Carradine, who has been in more movies than I can remember is contantly fidgeting with fake looking lab equipment and explaining to Franchot what is going on. He does crack me up when he tells Satana he must destroy the “crazy” astro zombie, right after re-animating it. Then he says he can focus on the astro man whos’ brain is morally pure. This was five minutes after Franchot pumped Lime Koolade mixed with carbon dioxide pellets into the neck of a lovely, vibrant young woman, stapped to a slab.(Who had her whole life ahead of her.) Makes you wonder what his version of a morally sound mind is.
I first saw A Z back in my “blurred years” (early 20’s)at a drive in theater. Since I was blurred, there were many gaps in the film. so I purchased the DVD.
If you are a collector of horror/gore genre. I say go for it. But, please remember you are not going to stimulate your intellect with this film.

For any of you who may have suffered through the ridiculous train wreck that was the Peach Girl anime, Nana is a fresh breath of air. Yes there’s pretty clueless girls, and plenty of hot guys, and yes there’s lots of drama. but it’s all done better. The animation is better. The voice acting is better, the characters are more developed and real. It is kind of paced slow, it starts at the present time and then spends 6 episodes giving u their back story of the year before they all moved to Tokyo. The only bad episode is where u see basically the entire first episode all over again, but with smaller new parts added. that was kind of cheap, but its off to a great start. It follows the manga pretty faithfully, and so everything is gone into detail..maybe a little bit too much. and sadly at episode 11 things are really starting to take off, but that’s where this dvd collection cuts off. My ouran host club collections have at least 13 episodes and i think they could have at least given us two more episodes for the price they are asking. Nana is a great story, and it is a rollercoaster, things don’t always work out they way u think they will. If u like, drama, love, sex and lots of rock’n roll then Nana is for u!

Roberto Rossellini was moved by his concern with the cynicism and despair of postwar Europe. His Saint Francis offers an answer of old-fashioned simplicity and innocence to counteract the slyness and cunning of modern world (paraphrasing the booklet). It’s an idealistic film. A film of vulnerable and unashamed idealism -like his monks-.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flowers of St Francis - Criterion Collection! Click Here

This film was doomed to be misunderstood, if not dismissed as retrograde in its values, or simply ignored. But Christian values don’t cease to exist just because we don’t see them practised on the silly box. The evidence is that Rossellini has put them in front of our modern eyes and they still make the same impression on us: they are the right -righteous- values. Times don’t change, just as values don’t change, only the will of the people to accept or deny them.

The question we face in this movie is: How do we apply these values of innocence, purity, unselfishness, meekness, and charity to modern times? Do they change with the times or do they mean the same as they did in the 13th century? Evidently it’s us who have changed not the concepts. Why? Because watching this film Rossellini has made us identify with the Franciscan monks, with their unselfish love and innocence; he has made us see the world -even though a long gone world- with our present day eyes and we have -hopefully most of us- identified with them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flowers of St Francis - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Why aren’t there any more people like them today? I think there are. If only they would make movies about them. If at least we agree that those Christian values shown to us in the film are good, immutable and worthy to be pursued yesterday as much as today, we have a premise to work with. Then, the next step would be to conclude that pursuing those values are the right and laudable thing to do; at least to try to do. But on the contrary, we distance ourselves more and more from the ideal using all kinds of childish excuses: it’s retrograde, old-fashioned, un-realistic and many other things.

That an ideal is hard to achieve does not make it inadequate. On the contrary, we should strive harder to pursue that ideal. Once -long time ago- it was easy to be poor, to walk barefoot in the mud or in the rain, to sleep on dirt floors in the open, to give everything you had to another person because you had so little that you could -God willing- get it back some time soon. And now, when we have so much, we give so little. How much love can we afford to give away once we’ve given it to our families, our most intimate friends and ourselves? Not much, the tip. How much stuff can we afford to give away once we have satisfied our lust, materialism and greed and that of our loved ones? Not much, the tip. However today we have much more than yesterday; shouldn’t we be giving more too? This film leaves a sad impression of our drifting more and more away from our purpose driven lives.

It teaches by contrast. The message is as clear as Jesus’ parables for those who want to understand them. If you laugh at it then you are the laughable. ‘Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.’

Be sure and read Rossellini’s intro before you watch the movie. I did not and stopped watching less than half way through the film. After finally reading his introduction, I found the film absorbing and satisfying. Rossellini’s objective was, briefly, to bring St. Francis, his beliefs and his enviornment to us as he believes they really were without acceding to preconceptions. And he does it with his usual brillance. Finally, there is an interview with his daughter, Isabella, which is worth the price of the DVD. I expect this movie will be watched for hundreds of years.

Gilligan’s Island The Complete First Season is a must have for fans of the 1960’s comedy. Everything you could want is here. The 3-disc set includes all 36 episodes from the first season presented in standard black and white. The episodes look great in black and white rather than that awful color that was inserted into them while on TBS. The DVD also includes the lost pilot episode with three different cast members alongside Gilligan, the Skipper, and the Howells. Also on the DVD are tropical tidbits about certain episodes, profiles on how the cast was selected, and a tropical island survival guide.

The excellent cast really made this show what it was. Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale JR as the Skipper, Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III, Natalie Schaefer as Lovie Howell, Tina Louise as Ginger, Russell Johnson as the Professor, and Dawn Wells as Mary Ann made up one of the best ensemble casts in television history. Fans of this much loved show should run out and buy Gilligan’s Island The Complete First Season. You will not be disappointed!

Gilligan’s Island has often been an object of ridicule for both professional critics and self-annointed intellectuals alike, most of whom point out the various implausibilities in the show (i.e., the Professor is an “idiot” because he can cause nuclear fission using coconuts but can’t build a raft, the unliklihood of the Howells taking a “three hour tour” on an obviously inexpensive charter boat, let alone taking along three season’s worth of wardrobe and costumes with them, ad nauseum), but chances are these same critics have also seen many — if not all — the show’s episodes, and have enjoyed at least a few guilty laughs for their trouble.

One of the reasons why Gilligan’s Island is such a great show (it is the most re-run show in the history of television, and that INCLUDES I Love Lucy) is precisely because it is so wacky, nonsensical, and flat-out ridiculous.

In Gilligan’s Island — The Complete First Season, viewers are treated to 34 original episodes, uncut, including the rare pilot episode that contains three castmembers not included in the actual show as seen on television. The episodes are in black and white, but this doesn’t detract from the fun.

The complete list and brief synopsis of each episode have already been written by other reviewers so I won’t waste your bandwith in repeating them, however I will say one thing: seeing these episodes brings back many fond memories for me, and I didn’t even realize how much of a fan of the show I was until I watched this 3-DVD set.

I remember coming home from school in eigth grade each day and seeing Gilligan’s Island on TV, and that was over ten years ago. I hadn’t seen an episode of Gilligan’s Island in the intervening years until I bought the DVD set. It’s amazing, but I — and probably countless other people — could actually remember everything about the episodes, and my memory comes flooding back with the viewing of each one, right down to the manner in which a character pronounces certain words, and the way the Skipper cries out “Aeuph!” whenever Gilligan accidently hits his captain in the breadbasket, or inadvertantly drops something on his vulnerable feet, or the way Tina Louise’s mouth twitches in an oddly fascinating way when her picture is shown on the program’s opening credits.

Gilligan’s Island is one of those shows that you can watch today and enjoy, even if you’ve never seen it, as long as you don’t expect it to make sense or follow any logic. It’s one of those show’s you can LOVE if your viewing of that show is connected to fond memories of your own past — as for me, it includes summer vacation, playing Sega Genesis, playing nerf football with my best friends Howie and Art, and watching Gilligan’s Island.

My friend Art has since become a lawyer, and Garth became an architect. I teach in a middle school. We all grow up, but Gilligan stays with us all along the way. It’s wise to pick this set up, especially if you’re a fan of the show, because it’s one way you can relive and continue to live a pleasant part of your own history.

This woefully underappreciated animated film was created by the team behind the wonderful Watership Down. The story concerns a pair of dogs, Rowf and Snitter, who escape from an animal-testing lab in the wilds of England and their attempts to survive in a cold and hostile world. Rowf and Snitter traverse the wilds and encounter both a fox named The Tod who trains them in the ways of being wild and humans who are either afraid of them or try to hunt them. The film is excellently animated and touches on themes of friendship, bravery, and animal rights. The ending is very moving and always makes me shed a tear or two.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Plague Dogs! Click Here

Many talented people lent their skills to this movie. Martin Rosen, also the creator of Watership Down, led a team which took almost two years to painstakingly craft this masterpiece. Among the actors who gave vocal performances for The Plague Dogs are John Hurt, Nigel Hawthorne, and Patrick Stewart as an army major. I was even surprised to see Brad Bird’s (creator of The Iron Giant and The Incredibles) name in the credits as an animator!

Unfortunately, while the film itself is great, this DVD leaves a little bit to be desired. The movie is presented in its North American edited length of 85 minutes. There is apparently a longer 99-minute cut available on DVD from Australia, but only in PAL video format. The film itself looks in pretty good condition for being almost 25 years old. Other than Scene Selection and Interactive Menus (as if those even count), the DVD is devoid of any special features. Another feature lacking on the DVD that I do miss from my old VHS copy is closed captions or subtitles. I have a little difficulty making out some of the difficult British Isles accents, especially from The Tod and the sheepherding dogs.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Plague Dogs! Click Here

I highly recommend that fans of adult, drama-oriented animation (and Watership Down fans in particular) check this one out. Despite its barebones DVD presentation, it’s a great, powerful film that deserves to be seen. I give the film 5 stars but subtract 1 star for the lackluster DVD presentation.

I don’t really have a lot to add about the film itself that the other reviewers haven’t already said; this is a dark, distressing, relentlessly grim and harrowing film about two dogs on the run from an animal research laboratory. It has a somewhat slow pace at times, and much of the animation is crude by today’s standards, but it has tons of character. It’s not exactly a pleasant experience but it has great power and a worthwhile message. Just to make it clear (if it isn’t already), this is mature material only suitable for older teens and adults.

I actually just wanted to address a couple of points in a previous review (possible spoilers coming). The original film, released in the UK in 1982, was 1 hour 42 minutes - this is the full, unedited version which can ONLY be found on the Australian DVD release (the quality isn’t great, but at least you’re getting to see the whole film). The difference in running time (99 mins on DVD as against 102 mins in theaters) is simply down to the fact that films run slightly faster on VHS and DVD than they do on the big screen; ALL films are approximately 3 - 4% shorter when transfered to home entertainment formats.

When it came time to release the film in the USA, director Martin Rosen had great difficulty finding a distributor willing to take it on. That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise; the film is far too disturbing for kids or families, and adults are likely to dismiss an animated feature with talking animals as kids’ stuff - so who exactly would pay to see this movie? In an effort to placate the distributors, Rosen was forced to cut 17 minutes from the film’s running time. Some of the cuts were simply made to speed up the pace, and others were made to remove some of the more unpleasant scenes (most notably the sight of a human corpse which the starving, desperate dogs have partially eaten). Needless to say, these cuts did little to lighten the film’s grim tone, and it only ever received a brief and extremely limited run at a few US theaters. Unfortunately, it is this shorter version that has been used for most of the recent DVD releases; as I mentioned before, only the Australian edition has both versions included.

There were some changes to the plot in the transfer from novel to screen. The somewhat forced but nevertheless welcome happy ending in the book was removed, to make the film a more powerful anti-vivisection statement. Also the fate of the fox, or The Tod as he is known, was changed; in the book he falls victim to a hunt, whereas in the film he sacrifices himself to a pack of army hounds as a distraction, allowing the two titular dogs to escape (temporarily) on a train. This was NOT changed due to any pressure from pro-hunting groups; neither Richard Admas or his admirers would have tolerated such a move. I imagine it was changed to allow the Tod’s death to play a more important part in driving the plot forward, and to show us the wily fox was a noble fellow in the end.

Fantoma’s DVD release of Mario Bava’s Hercules in the Center of the Earth ought to elevate his stature in the film world, if not as a “serious” movie director, then certainly as one of the cinema’s most talented and artistic lighting cameramen/cinematographers. The story is fairly generic muscleman stuff and the acting is competent if unexceptional (although three-time Mr. Universe Reg Park definitely has a believable physical presence as Hercules); what really sets this movie apart from virtually any other peplum flick are Bava’s neon-hued Technicolor visuals, which at times border on the hallucinatory. Throughout most of the movie he tosses off shot after stunning shot, many only a few seconds long, nearly every one impeccably lit, artfully composed, and accented with vibrant color. Bava’s interweaving of light, shadow, color, and sometimes literal “smoke and mirrors” to define space, mood, and even character is consistently impressive, even more so after reading the liner notes describing how little he had to work with. Cool sequences and striking set-pieces abound, including Deianira rising from her sarcophagus and floating across the room (like Lon Chaney in Son of Dracula); Hercules’s eerie visits with the sibyl; the psychedelic ocean vistas on the voyage to the Hesperides; Lyco (Christopher Lee) reflected in a pool of his victim’s blood; the flying ghouls rising from their slimy crypts (which must have given nightmares to the kiddie matinee crowd in 1964); and the climactic showdown between Hercules and Lyco, shot in an atmospheric Roman grotto. There’s almost too much to appreciate in a single viewing. While I’m not normally a huge fan of sword-and-sandal flicks (though I did watch lots of them on Saturday afternoons as a kid), and I could’ve done without the `comedy relief’ character, I still have to strongly recommend this movie not only to fans of Bava’s other movies (particularly Planet of the Vampires), but also anyone who simply appreciates breathtakingly beautiful color cinematography.
Fantoma’s DVD is transferred in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and anamorphically enhanced, from a virtually pristine Technicolor print of the original Italian-language dub. There is only the lightest of speckling evident; otherwise it’s crisp and clean, with lush, richly-saturated color, and excellent contrast and detail. Optional English subtitles are included, as well as the (continental) English-dubbed soundtrack. Unless you’re extremely subtitle-phobic, I recommend the Italian-language soundtrack with the subtitles. The English dubbing gives the film a campier, less serious tone and often renders the dialogue much more prosaically than the subtitles (example: Hercules’s final words to Deianira in the subtitled version, “Man’s love is passionate, but often inconsistent. Ours will last forever”; in the English dub, “As long as Theseus steals other men’s girls, I have nothing to worry about.”) Unfortunately we don’t get to hear Christopher Lee’s actual voice in either version. The DVD also includes excellent Tim Lucas liner notes; a gallery of approximately 45 color and B&W stills, posters, and ad mats; and a comparatively rough-looking trailer, matted to about 1.66:1 and suffering from medium to heavy scratching and lining, poor color, and merely acceptable sharpness and detail. The film is broken into 16 chapter stops and the Dolby 2.0 mono sound is full and clear. The definitive edition of an unmercifully neglected film.

Most of the Italian Hercules movies made during the ’60s were silly sword & sandal sagas. And so is this one. But, as directed by the great Mario Bava, it’s also an atmospheric exercise in cinematic style. The photography is great, the special effects are innovative, and Bava uses colour as strikingly here as he did in Baron Blood. Christopher Lee makes a great villain, too. So what if the silly storyline wanders far afield from its mythic origins? The weird flying zombies alone are worth the price of admission.

In the eyes of my 4 (almost 5) year old, this is a homerun. Not that he has a high threshold, especially for SpongeBob, but he really enjoyed this “movie.” It’s pretty typical SpongeBob in terms of the level of silliness, and it seems to be a hit with the target audience of children. If your child likes SpongeBob, then he or she should like this movie.

Plot-wise, SpongeBob finds the missing half of a special Atlantis coin, and when the pieces are joined, a special van arrives to take SpongeBob et al. to Atlantis. David Bowie voices the leader of the Atlantians, and typical SpongeBob hijinks ensue. If you are okay with your children watching SpongeBob, you won’t find anything objectionable here.

In my eyes, I prefer SpongeBob in 15 minute doses. This ran for 45 minutes on TV, but that was with commercials. I was surprised this was billed on Nicklodeon as a TV movie when in actuality, it was quite short. I know there are complaints about Atlantis inconsistencies from mentions in past episodes, but come on, let’s not take this too seriously.

Spongebob Squarepants has a brand new DVD movie available. Spongebob’s “Atlantis Squarepantis” is now available on DVD. This is the latest feature length Spongebob Squarepants movie. Spongebob and his pals are on a mission to get to Atlantis, which is home to The Oldest Living Bubble. Having no expectations at the outset, Mars Daybreak turned out to be a refreshing, fun anime with colorful characters and a plot that is generally lighthearted but most entertaining. The story’s concept centers around a young man named Gram who falls into the clutches of the most notorious pirates on planet Mars (the setting of this story), pirates who possess a bad rap despite their Robinhood-like nature (looking out for the interests of others). And these are not your run-of-the-mill everyday pirates–all pirate characters (human, animal, and alien alike) are quite unique with interesting personalities, skills, and traits. Without going into any great detail, the story is chalk full of mecha action, swash-buckling sword fighting, high-speed ship chases, espionage and double-crosses, plenty of comedy, and deep-seated romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this series because of the adventurous plot that centers around a mysterious Mars secret treasure that Gram unknowingly holds the key to opening, the lighthearted nature of the action (no gory blood or extreme violence), the sincere development of some of the main characters in the story, the colorful and well-drawn animation, and feel-good feelings one comes away with after watching any number of the episodes (not to mention the great music in the opening and closing songs). I would highly recommend this anime for most viewers (as I am a fairly new anime viewer, here is a brief rundown of anime series I have completed and my personal ratings to provide some relevance to this review: Ruroni Kenshin–9.3 out of 10; Basilisk–6.5 out of 10; Full Metal Alchemist–8.7 out of ten; Neon Genesis Evangelion–7.3 out of 10; Mars Daybreak–8.5 out of 10).

The concept is pretty simple — Robin-Hood-style pirates on Mars, in an unspecified future time when the whole planet is covered in seas.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mars Daybreak: Anime Legends! Click Here

And fortunately its simplicity is part of “The Mars Daybreak’s” charm — comedy, plenty of action, magical necklaces and big underwater mechas. And while some of the characters never quite endear themselves (the snotty Vestemona), the imaginative underwater adventures and likable pirates are plenty of fun.

Mars’ economy is crumbling, and both food and work are hard to come by. Former dockworker Gram gets swept off a city-ship while rescuing a pal. His necklace starts glowing, and he is scooped up by a mysterious “round buckler” (read: underwater mecha). Unfortunately Earth Forces attacks him, thinking that he’s with the pirate submarine Ship of Aurora — and soon Gram finds himself as the Ship of Aurora’s newest pirate.

He quickly becomes invaluable to the crew (for his super-powerful Round Buckler AND his brilliant cooking skills), but is unaware that a childhood friend named Vestemona — now an Earth Forces cadet — has returned to Mars and is obsessed with getting him to mend his ways.

But when Gram’s necklace is revealed to be a Mars Aborigine treasure, the Ship of Aurora finds itself on the trail of an ancient treasure — which is also wanted by cruel mercenary pirate Kubernes. And they have plenty of problems already — ghost ships, seaborne brides, disastrous parties, mutinies, idiotic communists, baby rays, and the Earth President’s daughter, who is smitten with Gram and insists on joining the crew (much to the Mars president’s chagrin).

But when Vestemona’s obsession with Gram leads her to disobey orders, she ends up pronounced dead and captured by Kubernes. But as she and Gram settle their differences, the Ship of Aurora is threatened by Earth Forces — and it may the end of the line for the jolly pirates, unless Gram can save them.

“The Mars Daybreak” has no deep message to impart, no tormented heroes, no realistic action, no complex storylines, and (admittedly) not a hugely imaginative concept. But its lack pf pretensions is one of the reasons it’s such an endearing series — it’s a simple adventure yarn with floating cities and mecha.

Along the way it develops a plot arc — mysterious artifacts, treasure, Martian history, and a villain (Kubernes) who actually seems halfway competent (unlike the idiot president) and has a Round Buckler shaped like a mermaid. Lots of underwater battles, killer construction equipment, sword fights and battles with Earth Forces. In fact, the final few episodes become downright grim, as Gram and Vestemona becomes the only things between the pirates and death.

But fortunately “Mars Daybreak” never takes itself entirely seriously — most of the episodes focus on the quirky pirates. We get lots of comic relief, the required onsen episode with required double-entendres (”Wow, I guess mine IS twice as big as yours”), some haunted-house spookiness and lots of good-natured internal clashes (the captain becomes obsessed with a hit-and-run sub).

Gram is a likable hero: mellow, friendly, and honest about having no life goals except making enough money to live on. The pirates are a colourful bunch as well — stern but kindly Captain Elizabeth, stoic Sea Witch Ester, vaguely immature Aki, timid psychic Megumi, chilly pilot Yagami, and a talking cat and porpoise. Even the Earth Forces officers are well-done (including the aptly-named Captain Doolittle).

The one flaw? Vestemona redeems herself somewhat late in the series, but before that she’s a self-righteous, snotty brat who despises everything. She and Gram eventually fall in love, but she practically stalks him across Mars first — and tries to convince him to go back to being starving and unemployed.

Fortunately Vestemona is not enough to taint the rest of “The Mars Daybreak,” which succeeds in being a gung-ho sci-fi story with an action-comedy twist. Definitely worth seeing.

This one is not for everyone. Most people will probably not only have trouble with its length, but its style, as well. Both as wild as it is imaginative, Christmas Tale is like a post-modern jazz score, mixing elements from a variety of cinematic styles that are jarring (at times), but always interesting to behold. As long as the film is, it always keeps moving and changing before our very eyes. What makes its odd stylistic combinations work is the compelling depths of its explorations into family and the bonds the unite, or divide us. Like and The Royal Tennenbaums, with a nouvelle vague twist, the film is not only full of odd combinations of image and music, but seems to jump from one film to another from scene to scene, as if each character or emotional quality (from light comedy to serious drama) were each receiving its own rendering. At times, the characters turn and speak directly to the camera. The filmmaker also intercedes by providing chapter headings and keyhole views, but, somehow, what could have become a cacophony of chaos, turns into a wonderment of cinema that any real cinephile will be amazed to behold and want to experience again….

The accolades might always go to Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths (both terrific).

But in the third season of the series, Calista Flockhart goes deep and gives the most nuanced performance of the year. She deserved an Emmy for this season (and they snubbed her). The third season had it’s share of mistakes, but Flockhart was a joy to watch. It’s so good to have her back on television.

Brothers and Sisters feels like an amalgamation of numerous television shows all blended up and mixed into one huge hodgepodge story. With some parts Army Wives, West Wing, Arrested Development and many others, Brothers and Sisters captures a lot of their elements but rarely ever delivers the part that made them worthwhile. The show may fail in the ingenuity of its story and how it tells it, but in terms of casts few shows on right now can match its star power. It may not be the best thing you’ve ever watched, but it has crafted a deeply tangled mess for itself that the writers are clearly enjoying detangling and retangling (which isn’t even a word) all over again.

It’s not that the life of any one person in the Walker family is all that complicated, but just that there are so many people involved that even if they all led lives of simplicity, the sheer volume would be bound to create some conflict either way. So when you toss in Justin, a drug-addicted veteran (Dave Annable), and his new romantic interest (Emily VanCamp), who was until last season presumed to be the lovechild of his father by another woman (Patricia Wettig), things are bound to get interesting. Or maybe you’d prefer the addition of Kitty (Calista Flockheart) and her ex-presidential nominee husband (Rob Lowe) fighting hard for the Republican conservative agenda even after hiring Kitty’s [...] brother (Matthew Rhys) whose dreams of partnership at his firm fell through, perhaps due to his relationship with his life partner (Luke Macfarlane)? You don’t think the show’s plot is burdened enough? Then let’s add some conflict in the family business as Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) resigns after firing her brother (Balthazar Getty) from his position as the company’s lead counsel. All of this happens as the matriarch Nora (Sally Field) struggles to find her calling after leaving the family business with the encouragement of the family’s last remaining sage Saul (Ron Rifkin), whose coming out of the closet hasn’t affected him professionally but rather personally in his family. The big seldom-happy family discover a few new surprises in the third season, but none so important as the identity of a new potential member of the Walker family.

The cast is simply a powerhouse. You have stars here who have headlined past programs and still others who lead healthy careers on the silver screen. Seeing them congregated in one place leads you to believe that they all saw something in Brothers and Sisters upon first reading the script - and they were right. For all its twists and turns there is a stark feeling of family pervading it all. Their conflicts and celebrations feel appropriately weighted with everything that’s come in seasons before and yet petty disputes can still occur unfettered. It isn’t bloated, but there is still a sense that the writers are grasping at too much and consequently some of the show’s story is being underdeveloped. With that said, for having so much going on at once, never does it feel like any one character is taking the spotlight or that any are being left out; everyone’s presence is felt, it’s just that none are really allowed to gain the momentum needed to become dramatic bulwarks to pad the series’ vitality.

DVD Extra Features:

You’ll find audio commentaries on a few episodes as well as deleted scenes, but neither is all that illuminating. As if to research the season’s new direction for the Ojai business, the cast takes a trip to a family-run vineyard for the grand tour. They laugh, they drink, they make merry - and you can live it vicariously through your TV set. There’s an introspective piece by the matrons of Brothers and Sisters (Field and Wettig) wherein they discuss their roles and how their characters have developed over the seasonal arcs. Finally, there’s a bit of dual-action blooper reel business going on: there’s the official gag reel for outtakes and then a second little featurette about the cast and the pranks they pull on the set.

The show has only gotten better by twisting itself into loops, but in doing so it sacrificed depth for content. For some the trade-off was a good one, for others not so much. Where do you fall?
